AFCON Qualifier: Rwanda names new coach to face Ghana

The Amavubis of Rwanda has appointed Gilbert ‘Yaoundé’ Kanyankore to take charge of Rwanda’s remaining 2017 Afcon qualifier against Ghana on September 3 in Accra.

The 62-year-old veteran tactician was given the onus on Friday as interim head coach to replace Johnny McKinstry, who was sacked on Thursday after just over a year in charge.

Kanyankore will be assisted by AS Kigali head coach Eric Nshimiyimana and Jimmy Mulisa, who has been McKinstry’s right-hand man.

The trio is due to sign contracts today and immediately get down to the business of preparing the team later this week.

McKinstry was relieved of his duties on Thursday after a dismal run of results and Rwanda’s free-fall in the FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings, dropping down to a lowly 121st in the latest ranking released earlier this month.
