Neymar no longer Brazil captain after Olympic triumph

Neymar’s gold medal-winning match with Brazil in the Rio Olympics was his last as captain, the 24-year-old forward said Saturday.

“It was an honour to be captain,” he told Brazilian broadcaster SportTV. “But from today I will not be captain any more.”

Neymar scored Brazil’s goal in the 1-1 draw with Germany in the final of the men’s Olympic tournament and converted the winning spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out.

Now, with a new coach taking over Brazil’s national men’s team, it seems the captaincy role is open again.

Even before the Rio Games, there was uncertainty over Neymar’s status in the Brazilian team. Olympic team coach Rogerio Micale admitted he had spent time considering who should have the captain’s armband in this tournament.

“We had the discussion over Neymar as captain,” he said. “I wanted him to do it, he is the best person for it.”

“It’s a noble gesture from Neymar that he gives up the captaincy.”
