The Volta Regional Volleyball Association successfully ended its Volleyball Referees Refresher course in Sogakope on Wednesday, January 17.
The course, which was in collaboration with the Ghana Volleyball Association and the Ghana Education Service also trained, would be referees in Netball and Athletics in 3 zones, Kpando, Kadjebi and Sogakope.
Aimed at getting participants to be abreast with the rules of the game, handle matches with perfection and also promote, sustain and develop the sport, approximately 100 participants in total, benefited. The course began from Kpando on the 7th to 10th, continued at Kadjebi from 11th to 14th and ended at Sogakope from 15th to 17th of January.
Renowned Volleyball referee, Douglas Doe was the resource person for the three zones.
Chairman of the Volta Regional Volleyball Association, Johnson Ablordeh in an interview with TalksenseSports, explained why they couldn’t finish with everything, hoping for future events to continue from where they left off.
“We started from Kpando, went to Kadjebi and ended at Sogakope. The attendance at Sogakope was better than the previous zones. We wanted to bring all the rules of the game to our referees but was only unfortunate that time couldn’t allow us to do everything that we have planned for them, because Netball and Athletics were added. And so there was not enough time for what we had wanted to do. Hopefully, we will call them back and do something about it again. With that one, even if it is not held in Volta, that will go a long way to help them become qualified referees, because as for this one, there are one or two thing that should be added. They should be able to write exams, but it didn’t happen in the 3 zones.”
Volleyball in Volta is burdened with finances, as cooperate bodies have left them to their fate. The Association has failed to continue their maiden league organized in 2016.
After failing to turn up twice for the Southern Volleyball Championship in Koforidua and Takoradi respectively due to finance, Volta will host the Southern zone this year in July 2018.
They however participated in last years’ Sports Festival held in Kumasi but came back with no laurels.
