Thursday, February 1, 2018 witnessed a historic event as the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) gave birth to Volta Chapter at the Modern Media Training Institute in Ho.
Being the first regional chapter to be inaugurated, the rather short but rousing and attention-grabbing ceremony coincided with SWAG’s 50 years Anniversary.
Out of the 15 inaugurated, a 3 member interim executive (Coordinator, Eric Eli Adzie, Member, Davis Attuquaye Clottey and Secretary Tilda Elinam Acorlor) were sworn in by the President of SWAG, Kwabena Yeboah and given a working certificate to work with and ensure the growth of SWAG in the region.
President Kwabena Yeboah, in his address to the Journalists across the region from print, radio and online says he believes in quality and not numbers.
“I am very excited to be here, and the most beautiful thing is that, you know SWAG is 50 years this year. And wonderfully it coincides with the first ever chapter of SWAG. When I see the passion and enthusiasm you guys show, it really touches my heart. I don’t believe in numbers, I believe in quality, so don’t just look at yourself, you don’t need to be 50 or 60 to believe that you have an Association, if only 5, 10, 15 of you show commitment, that’s it.”
Kwabena Yeboah, who was in attendance with General Secretary William Ezah and Charles Osei Asibey also advised members to take education serious, citing the benefits of belonging to SWAG.
“Once you belong to this body, it makes it easier for us to share the goodies together and education is very key to me. Organizing the SWAG Awards night cannot define our terrain but the ability to educate yourself is very important and to enhance the opportunities that come your way. Because if you’re not properly educated, how can you educate the people through sports. We have organized few seminars and some members have benefited from trips outside the country. As you improve your quality, all these opportunities are available to you. We also belong to AIPS which also gives you enormous opportunities around the World.”
The Writer concluded saying “What is meant belonging to SWAG, it’s about excellence, it’s about distinction, and it’s about integrity. You cannot belong to swag and have credibility issues. Journalism is about credibility, it’s about authenticity, once you lose it, you lose everything. So, it is so important that you educate yourself, learn the rules of the various disciplines you’re reporting.”
SWAG who has members across the country will get other regions inaugurated as well.
This year, SWAG will honor heroes and heroines from 49 nominees, including individuals and institutions in 21 categories drawn from 18 sporting disciplines.
The 43rd SWAG Awards Night, is set for Saturday, April 28, 2018.
