The Greater Accra Handball Association (GAHA) successfully ended their Annual General Meeting but not without major decisions that will govern them for the coming season.
The AGM which came off the Presec Legon Conference room on Saturday, February 3, saw representatives of the various clubs, helping amend the local rules drafted by the executives.
Key among the amendments made is about the officiating official allowance which members felt will be difficult for some clubs to afford, looking at their financial background. The GH₵20.00 proposal per official per match was not accepted and so, the GH₵10.00 remains with the Association obliged to find ways to improve on it.
Sanction fee, which was also proposed to be doubled if offender refused to pay after one month was also cancelled but Affiliation fees were for the first time clearly defined and both security and Civilian clubs will pay a unique amount for it. The security clubs will now pay GH₵500.00 as affiliation fee per team in addition to their original participation fee of GH₵1000.00 per team per gender. Civilian clubs will also pay GH₵100.00 as affiliation fee per team in addition to the already GH₵250.00 per team per gender for participation fee.
The steps in the separation of ties, which brought chaos at the end of last season were also discussed and agreed upon that ‘there should be a coin toss after a playoff between teams involved who find themselves tied at every level from points to goals difference following a specific order’.
Meanwhile, GAHA is positive in the acquisition of a sponsorship deal with Origin 8 Company.
President of GAHA, Paul Kofi Yesu Dadzie, in an interview with the media after the AGM, said they might have the name of the league as Origin 8 Handball League.
“The year looks so bright because something which has been away for a very long period is now coming back. Sponsorship is something we have been battling with for years now but here is the case, we have a company prepared to sponsor handball, so I thank God for that big relief. And I’m sure, they won’t only come in kind but will definitely also part of the cash. Even though we have not had any agreement at the moment, I will like to express our appreciation to Origin 8. It is possible that, when we sit with them, we name our league ‘Origin 8 Handball League’ ”.
Origin 8, is a company that brands other companies, especially banks.
There was also the balloting for the league which saw 2 additional clubs; Airforce bouncing back to the league after 2016 and El Wak Wings Handball club, joining for the first time.
For week one of the League which is likely to begin in March, Air Force welcome defending male champions Police, Army plays Hostas, Navy host Lekma and Fire travel to Renijoe. Others have female Champion of champions trophy holders Prisons playing at home to Cantonment Youth, Asomdwe locking horns with Legonite with El Wak, standing by.
Balloting for the Gala and knockout will be done at a later date and yet to be named venue. With the AGM done, planning for the season which has already begun will ensure that the 2018 season begins on a good note.
