Ghana had to share points with Sierra Leone on Friday morning at the ongoing ICC World T20 Africa Qualifier A, due to a soaked pitch upon heavy downpour in Lagos.
The 9th match of the West Africa sub-region tourney which was scheduled for 9:30 am local time had to be cancelled and points shared as the pitch wasn’t still favourable even after the groundsmen and players of both teams worked to get it dried.
Officials, who had earlier decided to play a 5 over match at 12:15 later decided to share the points with both teams. However, Nigeria’s game against the Gambia which was also to begin at 1:50 pm came off.
The host batted first after the Gambia won the toss and elected to field. They scored 144 runs for 3 wickets and the restricted Gambia to a score of 56 runs, all out in 14.5 overs. Nigeria won by 88 runs and closed the gap on Ghana at the summit of the table.
Ghana stays on top with 9 points and a Net Run Rate of +2.503, while Nigeria follows with 8 points and +2.352 NRR. Sierra Leone lies 3rd with 3 points and the Gambia languish at the bottom still with no point.
Ghana will lock horns with Nigeria in a final showdown on Saturday, April 21 at 1:50 pm. It will be a very tough final as both countries stand the chance of lifting the ultimate. While Ghana pushes for a 100% winning record, Nigeria targets host and win. It is going to be a repeat or revenge game. Ghana, in the same competition, beat Nigeria by 7 wickets with a ball remaining after 119 runs, for 8 wickets and 120 runs, for 3 wickets results.
Head Coach of Ghana, Kodam Kofi Anefi in an interview with Herosportsgh.com says they will go all out to win tomorrow’s match.
“Tomorrow’s match is a must-win for Ghana. We have to go all out and win, not to think about a draw and Net Run Rate. The last time we played Nigeria, we started well, but our middle order wasn’t good. We have learnt from our lessons and we will come well tomorrow.”
Sierra Leone and Gambia plays first match on Saturday at 9:30 am.
