COESA Games: ASHBA take lead in athletics

The Ashanti/Brong Ahafo (ASHBA) zone has taken the lead on the medal table with eight gold and three silver at the end of nine track and field events at the ongoing Colleges of Education  Sports Association (COESA) Games in Tamale.

Volta zone follows closely with six gold, two silver and two bronze, Eastern/Greater Accra zone is third with four gold and two silver, while Northern zone has two gold six silver and seven bronze medals.

The Central/Western Zone is trailing the table with one silver and five bronze medals at the end of the nine events.

The ASHBA zone has been impressive so far at the games and grabbed gold in five female events — 1500m, 200m, 4×100m, 4×200m and medley, including three gold medals in men’s high jump, 100m and 4×100m races.

In the 200m final, ASHBA zone’s Jennifer Ntiamoah won in an impressive time of 25.56 seconds, having earlier recorded a time of 26.08 seconds in the first heat.

Shadrack Antwi won men’s 100m final in a time of 11.15 secs ahead of Enoch Asigri (Northern) and Francis Attah Yeboah (Eastern/Greater Accra) who finished in second and third positions in a time of 11.18 sec and 11.27 secs respectively.

An excited Antwi, a Level 100 student of the Mampong Technical College of Education, said: “I am very happy that I won gold in the 100 metres race because this is the first time I am competing in the COESA Games. I was also a member of the team that won the 4×100 metres event so I am very excited.

“We didn’t prepare well enough for this games but as for ASHBA, athletics is our field so it’s not surprising that we are leading in the track and field events.”

An estimated 850 athletes and 300 officials from 46 colleges of education across the 10 regions of Ghana are competing for honours at the biennial games.
