Ghana Prisons Service Handball club have set up a final showdown with Ghana Police Service Handball Club in the Greater Accra Handball Association, (GAHA Cup), after both sides won their respective semifinal matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 9 & 10, 2018.
Prisons female saw off Hostac 32-22 while their male counterpart beat Asomdwe 32-18 at Burma camp on Tuesday in the first semis.
In a similar scoreline on Wednesday, the female team of Police defeated Cantonment Youth 32-22. Cantonment Youth, having lost their former captain and first-choice goalkeeper to Army this season struggled to find their rhythm to a Police side which also had 4 regular players off the court due to perinatal periods. Police comfortably led 18-9 at halftime and had to exhibit consistency to finish it up at 32-22.
Police male saw a hard-fought 26-21 victory against Legonite at the Prisons Complex. The end to end game saw Police drawing first blood but seeing Legonite level scores at 4-4 after 10 minutes of play. Police, who were without their captain and experienced playmaker Bernard Amanor went to recess leading 13-9.
With both teams having a player each sent off for red card offences, fatigue in a spirited Legonite team, trail in the entire second half till Police carried the day.
The rivalry between Police and Prisons will continue as they have both had their bragging moments. It will be anybody’s day as the GAHA is yet to name a venue and date for the final of the knockout competition.
The GAHA Cup, which was initially named the President’s Cup, is the second competition apart from the Greater Accra Handball League, whose champions face the League winners for the Champion of Champions at the end of every season.
However, the Gala Competition which always precedes the League and others saw Prisons female and Police male winning it this season.
