Over thousand (1,000) pupils drawn from 20 Basic schools in the Mfantseman Municipality in the Central Region, benefitted from the Ghana Cricket Association’s (GCA’s) Project Wildfire from Wednesday to Friday, November 7 to 9, 2018 at the Cos Park, Saltpond.
With the collaboration of the Ghana Education Service and sponsorship from the Chief Executive Officer of Se-Manhyia Group of Companies, Nana Se-Manhyia Arkoteng Arhin, the 3-day event dubbed ‘Mass Introduction to Cricket’ really went well as all parties walked home with joy, having imparted and learnt about the game of Cricket.
Two (2) sessions each day, except Friday (1) saw the likes of Kuntu Methodist Primary, Catholic Boys & Girls, Saltpond Anglican JHS, Hinii MA, Saltpond T.I Ahmadiya, etc, benefitted from the basics of bowling, batting and fielding from the tutelage of 6 GCA officials, led by the Cricket Operations Officer, Henry Benjamin Ackom.
The beneficiaries who exhibited a high sense of interest and practice of the sport, adapting quick what the trainers took them through have what it takes to make it to the top, to play Cricket not only at the national level but also in top Cricket Clubs across the World.
Saltpond, after their maiden introduction to Cricket in 2013 by the GCA, formed the team ‘Saltpond Cricket Club’ and have so far seen their captain, Nurudeen Ibrahim, make it to the current Under 19 national team which came back from South Africa in August this year.
The Ghana Cricket Association then presented the Municipality with 8 sets of equipment, which will aid their everyday practice of the Sport, until they are introduced to the hardball.
The interest and desire to play the game keep broadening as the GCA also keeps up their target of extensively spreading the Sport across the country on, with the name ‘Cricket Project Wildfire’ which was launched in Accra on October 5, 2018.
After the launch, 400 people in the Ho Municipality in the Volta region, another 400 in the Kumasi Metropolis in the Ashanti Region, 284 in the Akwamuman District of the Eastern region have so far received the basic knowledge of Cricket. More of such programs are in the pipeline and your, region, community and locality will soon be visited.
