No money for Junior Championship – GTF

The Ghana Taekwondo Federation is in dire need of sponsorship for their annual Junior championship.

The championship which should come off latest by March will help the GTF to select athletes for the African Junior championships in April (9-13) and the Youth Olympic qualification tournament in Tunisia.

The President of GTF earlier stated how busy their year will be, with the Junior championship being their first event.

No date has however been set for the championship to take off due to sponsorship. Initial sponsors of the event, ‘Alhaji Blackie Bello Enterprise’ after sponsoring the championship for two years, had venue issues with the GTF and eventually pulled out.

Speaking to, Public Relations Officer of the GTF, Adnan Odartey Lamptey says they really need to have the championship as their last selection was 3 years ago. The Master of many Taekwondo clubs also says, they have written to the Ministry, hoping for response.

“So as part of our strategy, we must have the championship, actually to select the team, because last time we selected a team was three years ago. We still haven’t secured any sponsorship. We have also putting a request to the Ministry to see if they will respond. Then, we have the Youth Olympic Games coming up. So that is the normal sequence, the national championship, then we select athletes for the All African Youth championship and then hopefully, they will qualify for the Youth Olympics.”

The Federation is however calling on cooperate bodies to help get the championship date fixed and held.

Adnan, insisted they need to do everything possible to get the championship underway also revealing their contacts with stakeholders abroad.

“Yes, we would have it. We have no choice. We just have to do some magic. We have even tried talking some of our taekwondo people outside the country, if they can contribute.”

Taekwondo, apart from being a sporting discipline internationally recognized is for self-defense.
