Winneba Unique Fingers and the University of Education were crowned winners of the 4th edition of the Jaton Cup on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the male and female categories accordingly.
The annual Handball tournament organized in honour of Mr Ahmed Jaton Baba of the University of Education, Winneba, saw 6 male and 4 female participating teams at the University’s Handball Court.
Winneba Unique Fingers, Senya Breku Handball club, Baifikrom Handball club, Diaspora Handball club, UEW level 100 & 200 teams, UEW level 300 & 400 and UEW female team, all competed in the exciting one day round robin game.
The winners received trophies and an undisclosed amount of money for participating whiles the 3rd placed teams received souvenirs. Players, who excelled in the tourney, were motivated by souvenirs and an amount of GH₵100.00.
Special Guest of Honor for this year’s tournament Deputy Director General Technical of the National Sports Authority, Mr Saka Acquaye in an interview with ghanahandball.WordPress.com, Mr Saka Acquaye commended the organizers for a good work done and promised his outfits support to explore more talents.
“I think it has been a good exercise and I would like to commend the organizers for a good work done. We organize this tournament every year to honour the current president of the Central Region Handball Association, Mr Ahmed Jaton Baba who is also a celebrated sports personality, especially in Handball. We the NSA and with the help of the various federations, we will help explore more talents especially the youth for our various national teams, and that would help Ghana win more laurels at international games.”
This tourney goes a long way to help sharpen the talents in Handball and especially in the Central Region as they are yet to organize a league.
